- Making bad decisions, unhealthy choices is normal and acceptable,
- Eating junk food, processed food is cool,
- Having a big tummy is expected if you are married and doing a salaried job,
- Being overweight is expected if you are in doing a 9 to 5 job, married and having kids,
- Spending on things that are not needed with the money we don’t have is the norm now,
- Doing irrelevant stuff out of peer pressure and family expectations at different stages of life is common and acceptable ,
- Not preparing food and ordering food from outside regularly is the trend now,
- Changing accessories and electronics frequently is a norm
- Sleeping till mid-day on weekends and then eating unhealthy food at odd times is the lifestyle,
- Giving excuses for skipping the workout or exercise daily and proudly declaring that you gave up going to gym in a month is kind of a fashion statement,
- Having some sort of metabolic disease like diabetes, high BP, high cholesterol, being obese, heart diseases when you are in 30s or 40s is given,
- Giving children junk food, sugary food and drinks, processed food is quite normal and no one sees a problem here,
- Children suffering from obesity, high blood sugar, being more prone to breathing problems and allergies is quite common and normal,
- Children not having any physical activity and getting glued to TV or mobile playing games or watching videos for hours is no big deal,
- Not sleeping till mid night to binge watch Netflix and social media is a badge of honor and a proud activity that could be shared with others the next day.
- Taking vitamin, mineral and different nutraceutical supplements to boost health and immunity is considered strange. But taking medical drugs, steroids, anti-biotics, eating junk foods ridden with toxins, carcinogenic stuff, preservatives, coloring substances, flavoring substances is quite OK for many of us.
Many people around us are laidback and willing to be casual about life. Even if you put in a little effort in doing something different, you have the possibility of shining through and you might be better positioned than so many people in the society. People are so accustomed to avoid the pain of being disciplined in life, even having a little extra self-discipline could make you stand out in the crowd. So I would say, invest time in yourself , in your growth, in your self-development, in taking various steps to lead by example. This itself will give you an edge in life.
Going with the flow of life, giving control our health to every external factor possible, leading an ordinary daily life, making easy choices and thoughtless decisions, not taking care of health, not eating healthy foods, not exercising, not sleeping on time, not being responsible and disciplined, not having self-control is quite normal and we do not find it abnormal unless we are conscious about it.
It is the ‘in thing’ to give importance to unimportant and unhealthy lifestyle choices in our daily lives. We rarely notice the negative impact all these unconscious activities have in our lives. People continue with some stop-gap solutions even to resolve the issues that born out of the past bad decisions one made.
At the same time waking up early, exercising, working out hard, coming home and taking care of family needs, going to office on time, doing what is expected in the office and then trying to do something in the area of passion when time permits, eating healthy, try to sleep at a particular time, having a harmonious life is not what is expected and even remotely possible for many people these days. People who lead this kind of life are considered to be abnormal. People look at these kind of people and say that they are not enjoying the life and wasting the most important years. We try to justify our irregularities by self talking to ourselves, giving excuses, reasoning our laziness, saying things like we do not deserve it, it is not worth the effort and pain, we do not need that kind of a life. These days even trying our best to feed kids only healthy food is considered being strict and kind of harassing the kids.
