Serotonin vs Dopamine

What is the difference between the experience that you get from the presence of serotonin or the presence of dopamine.

Serotonin enables you to be in a state of will being, peace, pleasantness, state of calm at the same time having faith hope and energy to do things without seeking any rewards right now. So we do activities that such as meditation such as deep breathing, listening to music or dancing or pursuing over passion or engaging with our friends.

We can associate the activities that induce dopamine as activities that lead to an end product which gives reward of achievement. Dopamine is released in anticipation of the reward and motivates us to indulge in behaviour that gives us pleasure.

Educate your kids to be self-aware

From early childhood we have to train our kids about the reality of the world and uncontrollable and controllable events that happens in our life.

Life is about growth, progress and improving ourselves as we move on. Improvement in any area requires changes.

We must not say that marriage changes us rather we must say that marriage is an important event in life and we need to improve ourselves to make our marriage successful.

We must not say that job changes us but we must say that we have to improve ourselves to have a successful job.

We must not say that having kids changes us rather we must say that change is part of having kids.

When something changes in life we are attributing negative connotation to it. We are attributing something unfamiliar and uncertain that happens as distressful. Rather we need to attribute the life events and unexpected situations as stepping stones for growth and practice for our future better selves. Various dufficut events may be the practice we need and deserve to get better in life in order to face the ups and downs confidently.

Tragic Optimism – Finding meaning in trauma

Tragic Optimism

This post is about a short essay by the existential psychiatrist, Victor Frankl, called The Case for Tragic Optimism. Frankl wrote this in 1984 as a postscript to his classic book about his experiences of the holocaust: Man’s Search for Meaning. The essay makes the case for finding meaning in life despite the inevitable tragedies which we will experience. Frankl is, perhaps, one of the most accessible existentialist writers to read, and the essay is very engaging and thought-provoking indeed.
Here I’ll say a bit more about the author, summarise his argument, and say what I find inspiring about the essay, and where I feel it is limited or problematic.
Victor Frankl
Victor Frankl (1905-1997) was a professor of neurology and psychiatry who founded a type of therapy known as logotherapy. This was the thrid type of therapy to come out of the University of Vienna Medical School (following Freud’s psychoanalysis and Adler’s individual psychology). However, it was a lot more existential in nature than these more psychodynamic approaches, and has gone on to have a significant influence on the field of existential psychotherapy more broadly.
Frankl spent three years in Auschwitz, Dachau, and other concentration camps during World War II and these experiences had a marked impact on his philosophy and his therapy. They are movingly recounted in his book Man’s Search for Meaning. Following the war, Frankl returned to Vienna where he practised, and wrote and published over thirty books. He was also a visiting professor at Harvard.
Tragic Optimism
The Case for Tragic Optimism basically advocates a certain way of living, that is saying ‘yes’ to life in the face of its tragic elements. Here is a quick summary of the argument:
Frankl states that life involves three inevitable kinds of tragedy, the ‘tragic triad’:
Pain and suffering,
Guilt, because we are free to make choices in our lives, and are responsible for the impact of those choices, and
Death, and knowing that our life is transient.

He says that it is hard to find meaning in the face of such tragedy, but that if we do not, then our sense of meaninglessness lies behind our experiences of:
Depression,
Aggression, and
Addiction.

He also argues that meaninglessness is a particular issue in current western societies (when he was writing in 1984) where the youth see themselves as having ‘no future’ and people ‘have enough to live by but nothing to live for’ (p.142).
Frankl then puts forward three ways in which we can find meaning in our lives:
Through our work or deeds,
Through experiences or encounters with other people (e.g. love), and
Through rising above, and growing from, the inevitable suffering which we will experience.

So Frankl is advocating that we make meaning from all three kinds of tragedy:
Pain and suffering – from learning from the experience and finding meaning in it,
Guilt – by taking responsibility for our actions, and
Death – by living our life as if it was for the second time, knowing how we got it wrong the first time.

Frankl says that it is easy, in the face of inevitable tragedy, to fall in to nihilsm or to chase after things like happiness, success or youth instead of seeking meaning, especially in a culture which seems to encourage such pursuits. However, he is clear that the quest for meaning is the only one which he considers worthwhile. He suggests that seeking happiness is a form of ‘hyperintention’: Like trying to get to sleep, or trying to have an orgasm, it is one of those things that if we try too hard to make it happen we will be even less likely to achieve it. For Frankl the only true way to happiness is through finding meaning.

Your purpose in life goes beyond you

Meaning in life is always attached to something bigger than self. You need to have resilience and patience to see meaning in life. Your ability to see meaning and work for your purpose is dependent on the capacity to withstand or to recover quickly from difficulties; which develops toughness. When you believe and have faith that the ‘me’ could be destroyed but you live for something that goes beyond ‘me’ that is for a cause or for serving other people or sharing your experience for the betterment of others.

Change mind using your movement

You cannot change your mind with your mind but you could definitely change the state of your mind with your body movement. Changing how you feel using exercise and physical activity is more efficient and effective than to use our mind to feel better. Physical movement always induces hormones and neurotransmitters that makes us feel more optimistic and positive.

Be a good person regardless of your belief on God

In general there will be good results and outcomes to good deeds because majority of the people around reciprocate to good behaviour, kindness, caring, service and contribution. But evolutionary millions of yours back when the environment is dangerous and uncertain we humans were living based on our survival mechanisms and we must be living in the fight and flight mode for the majority of the times. There has to be a motivation that acts as a deterrent to enable good behaviour and prevent from doing immoral and bad activities.

We humans need a strong motivation to do something that is difficult, challenging which may not have guaranteed returns but risk associated with it. When we create a higher power that always looks after people who does good things and helps people who does positive contributions then at least for few people have a clear direction towards which they need to move for welfare of the society.

Morals, ethics, principles, being honest, sincere, trustworth, reliable, integrity, being responsible, caring, disciplined, accountable, committed, being brave, courageous are the traits that one needs to have regardless of getting good returns or not. They cannot be dependent of reward or punishment. They are noble causes to live for by themselves whether one believes God or not.

Are you driven or dragged

Are you driven by your purpose and meaning of life or are you being dragged by life. Are you being pushed by your vision and mission or are you being pulled by the expectations of others. Are you pushing yourself to do things that you love or you are being pulled by the life sucking activities you are doing. Are you motivated internally or motivated externally. Is your internal force more then external temptations that constantly distract you. Are you making decisions to meet others expectations or are you doing stuff to realize your true potential. Are you constantly seeking others approval or are you being your true self .

This is a terrifying and scary doctrine but this is a fact. So out of this you should not feel hopeless and helpless but it must instigate you to plan and prepare yourself to not get paralyzed in the midst of the situation.

Stop and think before buying stuff

There is nothing in this world that you could buy now and have the same excitement that you have now in next 5 to 10 years. There is nothing like that, so have this in mind when you are tempted to buy something that gives you instant pleasure and actually you would regret doing it after a while. It does not mean we should not indulge ourselves in buying and living in comforts. But in this times of social media which spreads the the feeling of envy and jealousy in people, many people buy things that they don’t need with money they don’t have to impress people who don’t care.

Forgiving is painful but worth it

The reason why forgiving someone is so hard is because you are accepting the pain. You are choosing to not do anything instead of you giving back to them. You are choosing to stay calm instead of taking revenge and retaliating. Generally it is easier for us to take the plane and accept the consequences if something bad happened to us because of our choices and decisions. But inherently we know that the cost we are paying for others mistakes is unnecessary and it an overhead to us. But forgive others for your wellbeing. It is not necessary that you forget what happened because you need to remember the event to learn and adopt from it.

Changing yourself is better then changing others

It is much easier to change your disposition or perception or opinions or beliefs than to change the disposition of others and outside world. Changing your disposition could be very difficult but it is much easier than to change the world.

If you can change it , go ahead. If you can’t , then either accept it or change your attachment to that external thing.

People are selfish when it comes to control

People exaggerate things that align and support there ideology. People love to blow things out of proportion and make mountain out of molehill if it works to drive their agenda. Many entitled people do not care before doing harm if they have some kind of benefit and gain control over resources. Having said that unfortunately many people are entangled in their own problems and issues in life due to which that casually accept the information they are hearing from various media sources and run their lives on misinformation and disinformation.
