Envy vs jealousy

Envy is looking at someone or something what others have and wanting to have it . In a way this can give that initial boost and motivation to pursue something if you truly want it.

Jealousy is looking at something that others have and want others to not have what you don’t have. This feeling comes from fear. It have negative effects. It is malicious in nature because you may even indulge in destructive behaviour. You just want others to not have what they have because it makes you feel bad.

Try to bring change in small steps

Internally if you feel that certain things should not be happening the way they are in this world, that means that you are angry and not happy about current affairs in the world you live in. This also means that maybe someone has to do something about improving the situation and that could be you. That doesn’t mean that you are going to completely reform and transform the entire system but you would spend your time and effort on finding a solution that could improve the current situation. It might take your entire life and maybe you would just be able to do a fraction of what you intended to do in the first place but that gives the meaning and purpose to your life. You may have less regrets at the final stage of life.

Your life’s meaning is in your pain

One of the most important considerations when you are evaluating your meaning in life and purpose is to check on yourself and find what pains you the most. Then work on yourself to become skillful in dealing with that pain and then offering your wisdom to others to reduce pain in their own life.

You should be willing to struggle and suffer to pursue your dream and passion and that becomes your purpose if your passion is serving other people. it’s not about doing what brings you lot of joy and instant pleasure, it’s about willing to stay in the pain and struggle to attain mastery over certain area of the life and spreading it to others.

Famous story of musk deer and its scent from the Upanishads

Musk deer live mainly in forested and alpine scrub habitats in the mountains of southern Asia, notably the Himalayas. The musk gland is found only in adult males. Musk is a perfume ingredient, or note, traditionally extracted from the anal gland of the male musk deer. In high concentrations, it smells like feces. And the ingredients evaporate slowly, so the smell lasts a long time. That makes it a base note in perfumery. The fragrance is so heavenly, you’ve probably heard of the word musk, used in colognes and perfumes, that’s where it comes from. That is why it is called “Musk deer.” Natural musk is one of the most expensive and very rare available fragrances in the world.

As we talked earlier musk deer have a special kind of fragrance in its gland, so what happens is that when the deer began to smell this fragrance, it doesn’t know where it’s coming from. It became one of the main goals for the deer, to find the source of this fragrance. It searched the bushes, the trees, the caves; went from hill to hill looking for the origin of the scent, which was not found anywhere. It was so frustrating that eventually, it will jump down a cliff, into the valley… thinking that the source of the fragrance must be there! It died.

That’s it. The story ends there for the deer. It never really figured out the source, which is inside itself.

We are looking for happiness outside like musk deer. But it is inside us. Our search for happiness is always external. We look for it in new things, clothes, houses, cars, new jobs, TV shows, junk food, alcohol, drugs, cigarettes, human love. But the truth is that none of those things can provide lasting happiness, only temporary pleasure. Even when we have them, we are scared of losing them. We spend our whole life in search of happiness in terms of success in school life as a topper, to be famous in college life, having more social media friends, getting a job, or earn a lot of money to fulfill all desire, of having a big house, car and so on.

According to a Forbes survey, most people after retirement say that happiness is not in earning money or having a big house and cars, but it is in having a beautiful life with lots and lots of memories worth living.

Why do we attach to low energy emotions

“People cling to their hates so stubbornly because they sense, once hate is gone, they will be forced to deal with pain.” – James Baldwin

You have a responsibility to heal yourself so that you don’t unintentionally harm others.

When you are hurt or encountered a traumatic event, it is natural to feel anger, bitterness, resentment, revenge etc,. In those moments it gives you strength and energy and it gives you the illusion that you are doing something about the event.

When you are in any negative state and low energy states you feel powerful because of the cortisol, adrenaline and noradrenaline flowing in our body. We get a feeling that we are using your energy to take some action. However you are just pushing the break and accelerator both at time which means you are overworking your body and mind resources by staying where you are. You are experiencing high volume of energy in body but would be disabled to do something rational to improve the situation. You brain likes low energy states because there is no energy spent but it is in the heightened state.

It is very difficult to let go off those negative emotions when you are hurt because you lose your energy if you stop overthinking. So these negative thoughts which raises our stress levels run automatically in a loop which gives us a temporary feeling of being in control. We get a fake feeling of planning and preparing to take some action.

Decisions and actions taken in low energy states would mostly result in unwanted consequences. Planning and preparation done in low energy states would lead to inefficient results which in turn lead of more resentment and disappointment. This turns into a self fulfilling prophecy where we convince yourself that you are victim of circumstances who is helpless and hopeless.

The only way to change the state of mind is to change the state of body. You can improve the mood and mental state by moving your body rigorously. Your mental state changes 100% of times when you move your body or exercise.

Loving and caring about someone or something is to risk being hurt and risk being not valued. It is highly possible that when you give and love selflessly you might be disappointed if it is not reciprocal.

Be motivated by process of success

People who are intrinsically motivated and who focus on the journey of becoming successful would stay committed, consistent, disciplined, persistent, develop grit, would be resilient and finally they would stay grounded whether they get the reward or not.

People who are motivated by the end result and reward would constantly seek instant pleasures like instant fame and lies, money, control, power, consuming things etc.,

The fear of scarcity

Scarcity = opportunity + reward + repetition (hope to satisfaction in next turn)

Many industries leverage our evolutionary behaviour of preparing ourselves for scarcity of resources. Our instincts and temptations are highly controlled by the fear of scarcity.

This is how we fear of missing out something which we do not need in first place.

Examples are casinos which enables gambling uncontrollably, also this is exploited by food industry and Fast Moving Consumer Goods industry.

3 V’s of food manufacturing industry

Ultra processed foods are manufactured with 3 key principles.

  • Value
  • Variety
  • Velocity

With respect to value they must be cheap which they are.
With respect to variety – do you have lot of flavours, lot of options and variants With respect to velocity you should be able to consume them with high pace they must be consumed like a quick bite and get lots of energy.

These foods are a combination of high sugar and fat or high fat and salt or a combination of all the three ingredients.

Once there into that loop of eating quickly to get a quick jolt of pleasure with low cost it is easy for food industry to pull into eating more of that stuff under the pretense of snacks .

Don’t analyze why a person is the way they are

There is no use in spending any time and effort in thinking why a person is the way they are, why the person is saying rude things, hwy they are behaving badly .

The focus should be on us. The focus should be on the way we respond to their behaviour, there attitude. The only thing that we have in our control is the way we perceive things and stand over ground without becoming defensive and without personalising things. Sometimes just staying calm would take away their negative power over us. Sometimes it is better to say nothing to say a lot.

People don’t want permanent solutions because there is no business in it

People in power never want to address the root cause of the the problem, they want to live on the problems that are plaguing the society. For instance, Instead of encouraging reservations for the exploited sections of the society, why not improve all the facilities and systems so that the deprived sections would receive the same quality of education and amenities at the grass root level. In the race of life, instead of moving the starting line ahead for certain sections of the society, why not create a system which empowers the kids in the early stages of life by give them high quality education and healthcare. This kills meritocracy and demotivate the many youngsters having great ideas for the humanity.

All the changes that need root cause analysis could take long time and effort but they are worth it. But even people may not have the patience to cooperate with the good intentions of well meaning leaders. They want immediate results, they want to get some results and rewards in the short term, they want to avoid pain, they don’t want to wait for delayed gratification and long term happiness, some sections want benefits without effort by playing the victim card, they are willing to give up long term autonomy for short term security, they want to get the false sense of safety for the moment.

Powerful people who are in power misuse their authority and realize their selfish agenda by taking advantage of victim mindset of the people.

Everyone encourages you to be unique until you become one

Everyone lectures you to be unique and be yourself until you become unique in your way of thinking and living. The moment people around you realize that you are separating yourself from the group thinking you face opposition.

You are expected to fall inline, you have to just follow the person in front of you, you just need to be doing what everybody does you just need to be part of the crowd. If you take a step aside and do anything out of ordinary , if you go against the normal established systems or do anything against the ordinary thinking of the people – you would be outcasted and in some cases you might be maligned.
