Be Aware – Our Brain Works Like A Thermostat

Excerpts from Dan Lok TEDx speech

Thermostat = A thermostat exerts control by switching heating or cooling devices on or off, or by regulating the flow of a heat transfer fluid as needed, to maintain the correct temperature.

We ALL have an IDENTITY — a set of BELIEFS that DEFINE who we are, what we can and cannot or WILL not do. And it’s based mostly on our past — some of which is painful, and some pleasurable.

Why is IDENTITY so important to dig under? Because BELIEFS about ourselves are among the strongest forces shaping our lives. BELIEFS control BEHAVIOR.

Here’s a metaphor: You’ve set your life’s thermostat at 24 degrees. That’s representative of your personal comfort zone. Note: it’s where you’re COMFORTABLE, but NOT your ultimate best self. That 24 degrees is where you are content physically, financially, how much intimacy you’re comfortable with, how connected you feel to your creator, your partner, your friends, your children. If things begin to drop ? If you go from a 24 down to a 21, 20, 19… well, something’s going to kick in! ?Your brain is going to say, “Hey! What am I doing down here at a 19?! I’m more than this!” That’s when your engine kicks on and you begin to get going. ??‍♀️??

Have you ever experienced this? Things got so bad with your health, your body, your relationship, your career, or finances that you hit a threshold and began to do everything you possibly could to make a change?

Unfortunately, the same thing happens on the OTHER side… If you’re a 24 degree guy and you start doing BETTER than you believe you should — stronger financially, you get in the best shape of your life, deeper relationships, more joy, etc.… for most people going from 24 to 26 to 28 degrees, their brain says, “Hey! What are you doing up here?! You’re a 24!” ⁉️ When you’ve achieved BEYOND what you’ve ever dreamed of you’ll feel the engine trip and bring you right back down to where you used to be. A.K.A. self-sabotage. Of course you would dismantle all that you have achieved gradually and you would not realize it because you do this sub-consciously.

That’s why you don’t need to CHANGE your identity… you need to EXPAND it.? In times of growth, our brain MUST be able say, “I AM capable of this!”

It’s why we need to do difficult and hard things that challenge us yet doable — it’s all just metaphors designed to get you to DO something your brain never believed was possible.

Could you do something today to redefine yourself? Something MORE encompassing of all of you today? Forget your past, who are you NOW? What have you decided to become?

  • With great responsibility come great power to transform, change and influence others
  • Physiology affects our mentality
  • Knowledge is power, knowledge is profit

  • We can do something and we can control it
  • You cannot bend or influence a person because of beliefs. Lot of strategies do not work because beliefs cannot be broken. Because of the beliefs because they are self-fulfilling. Unconsciously you tend to prove that your belief is correct.
  • Your self-talk will program your brain. Monitor your self-talk, control it for your benefit.
  • Beta is our conscious state, delta state is when we are sleeping , theta is one level above delta i.e. the creativity state. In between theta and beta is alpha state. This is state when you are meditation, when watching the television , trance state. Alpha state is the perfect state for learning, you are grasping all the info.
  • Success is an inside out game. All behaviors are belief driven.

Rejecting My Limiting Beliefs

I fear public speaking, I get nervous when I speak in front of a large audience, I worry if I would be judged by others, I worry if I get into an embarrassing situation – After giving class room trainings, presentations in meetings, taking interviews, after hosting numerous meetings, this is high time that I should control this feeling and believe strongly that I have the ability to engage audience and I can definitely overcome this primitive irrational fear. For this I will take conscious effort to get involved in those events which will enable me to face this fear again and again until it subsides.

I find it risky to venture into my passion  – I was not having the needed maturity and clarity on what my passion. Now that I know what I am passionate about and love doing, I have to take all necessary steps to pursue my mission and life ambition

I worry if the effort and time would be wasted if I fail – Failure is part of the journey. Only thing to keep in mind is not giving up no matter what happens. It is those intense disappointing helpless moments that will make you stronger, resilient, learn and grow and come up with strategies that are more efficient. Don’t be afraid of failures. Be ready to face failures as challenges that life throws at you and keep moving forward in overcoming them. In that process you earn respect not only from others but you will gain a lot of confidence, courage and much needed self-assurance that you can do whatever you want if you strongly believe in. Look at how you conduct yourself at your job, remember that you have been a consistent high performer in office and received appreciations from customers, clients, managers, colleagues in many occasions. Remember that there was never an task you failed that was trusted upon you.

I fear I would fall short of money to live– You have saved decent amount of money. You are well settled and secured than many people around you. You do not splurge on material things. You are not attracted to material things or cars or watches or mobiles. You have self-control to spend on things that only add value to you. You have the ability to save money to spend it for your loved ones. You have a strong support system for emergencies. You can easily survive on your savings. So stop worrying about the money factor if you really want to do something on your own in your life. You are just looking out for some alibis and rational lies to escape from your ambition. So stop this thought immediately and do whatever you could to gather all the material, skillset and information needed to start making steps towards achieving you passion.

I worry if I have to give up on my personal family time, I worry if my relationship with my wife could turn sour – You have self-control and discipline to manage various aspects of your life efficiently. Look at how you take care of yourself, your health and fitness which definitely supports and helps you to give high performance both personally and professionally. Just memorize how many times you close ones appreciated you for your patience and open mindedness. Remember how others look at you and feel like emulating you in various aspects of life. Remember how you managed numerous instances where you pushed yourself to help and support your wife even though you felt completely tired and exhausted. Don’t forget that your wife loves you and she is capable enough to work extra if the situation demands. She is a strong person and you have to believe more in her.  It is your job to change your mindset and just ignore those few times where she might not behave in accordance to you.  You will handle your personal life and you will definitely balance. You will make sure that you will spend time with your kid and wife. You will make sure that they are happy. At the end this is the top most priority for me whatever I do in my life.

I feel people would not respond well to my idea and venture – Why not. Is health not important to people. Is fitness not needed in people’s lives. Are all people ignorant of the importance of healthy lifestyle. Why do you just assume and imagine that people might not respond well to something that is so valuable in their lives. Why do you think all by yourself that all people give low priority to health. And why you do you assume that people will not understand you and do not encourage you. It is a noble thought and mission to provide healthy lifestyle options to people. You feel from your heart truthfully that you could make a difference in next generation by promoting healthy lifestyle. You feel bad and helpless about how big companies are misleading and programming people to have unhealthy food. You want to bring change in people’s mindset. You just need to work on all necessary tools and skillset to make a strong impact and market your idea. First locally and then take small steps to expand, one step at a time. You will make a difference. At least the work you put in and the progress you are making will have a positive impact on your son’s mindset. He will cultivate good habits gradually and have a great positive lifestyle, your wife will improve herself. After all this gives more satisfaction than any other achievement. You could start with something and if your mission and vision is strong enough, you will attract the right people and opportunities. Just be patient and vigilant of any such possibilities and take full action needed. You will succeed if you have the will, power and passion to make a better community. You are trying to serve others selflessly to understand the concept of health and fitness using your business venture. When your mission statement is to contribute and bring a positive difference in other’s lives , you will find ways to realize your dream.

Casualness and Complacency Today

No wonder people are unhealthy and unfit eating all the junk food, loaded with unhealthy carbs, ultra processed food, adding sugar in everything they eat or drink, eating deep fried food. What are you feeding your body to feel lively energetic and alert. Added to that we do not care go to sleep on time and have some physical exercise. We watch all kinds of irrelevant and negative news on TV, spend hours watching mindless videos online and browsing social media. We also dump our body with toxins by smoking and drinking.

What we are doing here is basically get addicted to junk food and junk information. Subconsciously we inject agenda and propaganda of others into your mind. We are non-stop getting bombarded by information from all side whether we are at our home or driving or in office or walking. What do you expect now. Will exercising and sleeping well help you when you are dumping different kinds of unhealthy stuff into your body and mind feeling gloomy, hopeless with all the negative grave news promoted by different forms of media.

Many high paying professionals may not feel fulfilled by what they are earning and the kind of lifestyle they are enjoying. We tend to buy things or eat food or give into other diversions to just fill in the gaps and deficiencies we have in our lives. These are false impressions we have in our minds that we can compensate our drawbacks and inner demons with the material stuff. Reason for these kind of reckless behaviors could be anything like unable to commit to a healthy lifestyle and exercising, unable to stick to a diet, inability to remain consistent with the promises we make to ourselves, not maintaining healthy relationships with family, inability to spend productive time with kids, naming busy schedule for missing the promises you made, feeling that you are not good enough to achieve something you desire, believing that you don’t deserve something great in life, unable to have discipline to lead an inspirational lifestyle. We choose diversions to fake our sense of importance. We try to associate our value and reputation in terms of the car or cloths or house we own and the neighborhood we live in, we try to get along with people who do not match our mindset and try to emulate things that they are doing.

This is like trying consciously to make ourselves happier . That means we use all materialistic things to make ourselves happier. This is a never ending process and one could not be happy because they always find some other materialistic need to be happier.

We try to live our lives according to wrong programming we had from childhood. We grew up watching our parents and if our parents told us that getting a job will settle your life and that leads to happiness for the rest of your life, you have created a strong subconscious pattern that I need to get a job to be happy in life as it is associated with desirable partner, car, house, wealth, respect etc. During this process you would never consider the thought of what you are interested in and passionate about.

Being present in the moment, progress, learning and growing as we go through the journey of achieving something is more important that the goal itself. In the process providing some service and adding value to others keeps us going.

Moreover, now a days we are not doing anything to satisfy for our reward systems that are engraved evolutionarily in our brains. You would not earn relaxation and pleasure when you do not go through struggle and challenge. Current lifestyle would not give these opportunities to challenge ourselves physically and mentally on a regular basis. Our jobs are largely sedentary and stressful and many people working in jobs that they don’t want to do but still continue due to myriad reasons.

We go sit at our desks and do our mediocre work which many of us are not excited about and our brains are deprived of the main activities that involves challenge. Evolutionarily our brains had to experience pushing through pain, surviving, hunting, gathering, protecting the family as daily tasks. And the fact is that these are the tasks we feel rewarded and fulfilled. It is gives a sense that we did our duty, we went through struggle and felt great once we achieved it. It is in earing the reward after putting in the required effort gives the brain its necessary dose of healthy hormones and stimulus to build brain tissue. We are not getting the basic physical movement that is needed to keep ourselves prepared for the events ahead. You are not warning up for the day ahead. And then you keep stuffing yourself with random not so nutritious food through out the day at irregular timings. Now your body and brain constantly feel they are not getting what they are supposed to get. Next thing that happens is slow deterioration of your physical and mental abilities.

My fitness journey as an IT professional – Redefined my life

  • I am an IT employee working for well reputed MNC IT company holding a senior position. I am a happily married man to a wonderful wife and a lovely kid.
  • Mine is a typical life of any IT employee living in Bangalore city. Daily routine will be like reluctantly wake up, getting ready, commute to office at 9 AM though traffic chaos, stay in office till 7, then return home through the notorious Bangalore traffic, reach home to take care of family needs, spend some time with my wife and kind, before I realize it is already 10:30 or 11 PM . So finally go to sleep by 11:30 PM or 12 PM. This is could a common routine among most of the private sector professionals .
  • I have been working in IT industry from 2017 and it has turned busier with changes in personal life, more responsibilities. With marriage and then with the arrival of my baby boy things turned hectic. But one activity that I do even no matter what happened in my life is  exercising, it could be anywhere be it gym or at house.
  • Now I want to be clear that that I do not want to be a bodybuilder with great physique and aesthetics. My main goal is to become fitter, stronger and healthier than ever before in my life.
  • So in the last week of May 2018, I decided to transform my daily routine, my diet, my fitness style, my priorities. This involves refinements in my diet, food intake, rigorous and consistent training . All this while working full time in office for 9 hours, 1.5 hours on an average in traffic on a 2 wheeler, going home on time and taking care of all other daily chores .
  • You might ask me “why all this now”, “what is the need or necessity to do all this crazy stuff now”, “it does not make sense”, “I am not a fitness enthusiast”, “I am already stressful”, “full of work”, “suffering from some physical or mental ailment”, “no time to even sleep”. This is much more than that. For sure I am going to demonstrate how a consistent routine changes your perspective and priorities in life and how physical fitness routine is one of the best means to transform your mindset for good.  This is the part where I was also at the same level of thinking and I was completely unaware of the bigger and better things yet to come in this process.
  • However, at the time I started, I was having two main objectives.
    • Firstly I want to have a daily routine that makes me feel pumped up every morning, that challenges me, a daily routine that puts me in pain yet a chance to grow, a daily routine that tests my determination and self-control, a daily routine that makes me push the boundaries physically and mentally. Basically I look forward for the next day to attack it and must not snooze the alarm when it rings at 5:30 AM. When I looked at such possibilities and considering the interests or passions I have, my body and mind are only things that are in my control. Anything other than these two are out of my hands and I cannot control them beyond certain point. But with my body and my mind, I can do anything. It is just that I have to decide to do something worthy with them, that’s all. So I decided to transform my physical and mental strength to a higher level.
    • Secondly, I am passionate to spread awareness the immense value of health and fitness among youth and working people especially between age group of 20 to 40 years old. Motivate people, inspire people by showing real life example of myself to prove that we all can do this. Finally prove that physical fitness leads to mental transformation. If this happens with a lot of people, they lead a healthy meaningful life, their families have a better life, then who knows this mindset can do wonders in achieving great things for them which extends to they inspiring others in the process.
  • Now how would I get the required guidance for achieving my target. Here I would say that there is no better tool than internet if we could use it for right purposes. Though I had good knowledge and awareness on health, nutrition, fitness as I have been doing it from past 10 years, I decided to upgrade myself.  I started doing a lot of research on topics of fitness exercises, nutrition, health, physical anatomy so on. I read through hundreds of expert articles and watched hundreds of hours of video demonstrations how to perform the exercises and movements correctly. I did research and a lot of reading on nutrition and supplementation because this is the most important part that is must for me to recover from the rigors of training, that keeps me attentive to be give my full services at office for 9 hours, then be a good husband and a father when I reach home. Hence I started this research, reading and upskilling process. Usually I used to do this whenever I get some free time in office or at home.
  • I wake up early morning. Train for around 1 hour 30 minutes and get refreshed to be back to my job. I will be ready to work by 9:30 AM. After that I start on usual office work. I return home mostly by 7:00 PM in the evening, sometimes I may be late. Play with my kid and assist my wife with chores and finally try to go to sleep by around 11 PM. This is just an example of how a normal day runs for me.
  • I intentionally skipped the daily preparation that I do at home and office, food nutrition and diet I follow, the challenges I face at home and office while keeping up with this routine and all other stuff that goes into my regimen.
  • Coming to my overall health and fitness, there is a multifold increase in my strength, endurance and stamina. Now I have better immunity towards common cold, Allergies and other infections. I am able to handle work pressure and stress more efficiently. I experience a sustained energy, mental focus and clarity of thought throughout the day. I am able to be energetic when I return home which enables me to meet all the necessities in my personal life.
  • We have to observe one thing here. I work out for just 1.5 hours which is may be 7% of the day. Rest of the 93% of the day is about successfully doing rest of activities that support livelihood and life. I am going to talk in detail about why this 7% of a day spent in gym positively impacts rest of the daily activities. Basically you would be amazed to observe how it forces us  to be disciplined and organized in all other tasks. During a course of time, people around us and we ourselves could feel transformation in us physically, mentally and emotionally.
  • Just to give a glimpse of how everything is interlinked once we start with a fitness and strength training first thing in the morning. First of all, the three main elements which are tightly coupled are exercising, well informed diet and nutrition plan throughout the day, optimal sleep to recover.
  • Now all things are interdependent, just to give a summary. If you perform an intense and well defined strength training early in the morning then you cannot and will not survive without following a systematic diet and nutrition plan. We need to have meals placed at right intervals with recommended sizing of macro nutrients. Well then if we need to have a meal at a given time, then we need to plan everything around it appropriately, or else we might miss the meal which results in exhaustion . As a result of this we are planning our office work and meetings more resourcefully. If we do all these tasks correctly form the morning, then we can reach our home on time and spend some quality time with our family. And finally if we got to feel energetic and get going the next day, sleep is extremely important. So we tend to not waste any time in watching videos, movies or doing any other trivial stuff that would reduce our sleep time. So we should plan everything at home so that we would get to bed at specific time. Finally for you to wake up early and leave home on time, you need to prepare everything like food, supplements, clothes, bag etc. the previous night. I need to hold together what all things to do proactively so that I could manage tasks at work and home on time and what goes on in a typical day.
  • In the process of following this routine and consistently , I am inherently developing a strong mindset. Waking up early, intense training/exercising, proper diet and nutrition plan, finally need to hit the bed as soon as possible. While doing all these activities, managing work for 7 to 8 hours, studying and doing research on fitness, nutrition, spending time with family, address the needs at home, take care of parents needs and other miscellaneous tasks.
  • So my dear friends, now you can realize how much of a mental strength we have to develop to follow a strict routine, what kind of mind set we need to develop and sustain to continue with this process daily, the patience needed to wait for the results to realize, the kind of determination we need to have to overcome challenges and obstacles that try to distract us from various fronts.
  • Finally I would like to describe the process I went through in a single sentence – Watching your physical and mental transformation is like watching a plant grow into a tree. You will not see drastic improvements day by day, you might not get much support from your close ones, many people would not even understand why you are doing even after explaining, many times you question yourself. But if we are determined, have the will to do it with consistency and sincerity, it results in massive gains holistically.

Some facts as per my opinion:

  • We all start as equals, with little masses of muscle and tiny bones and less than 200 ml of blood in our body. Then why do very few people turn out to be exceptional human beings who we all look up to. What makes them so special that when we read about them or get to know them, we would be in awe. Because they did those things that we consider to be impossible and amazing.
  • If you are willing to do the work, put in effort, improve day by day one step at a time, be consistent and disciplined, many things are possible. Just that we need to put all of this into something we are passionate about, to change ourselves and in the process make a positive difference in other people’s lives.
  • Only way to make a special place for your self is to improve yourself continuously. We don’t need to have a concrete goal to attain, but if we strive to be better than what we were last day and keep improving day by day, that makes a huge difference in terms of progress we make. This is what I have learnt.
  • I sometimes feel very sad and almost feel no sympathy for people who squander their precious nature given gifts and privileges like health, people, wealth etc. Like some great person said our body is our temple. It is like disrespecting everything you have in life if we cannot take right care of our body. Remember that what we give is what we get, same is applicable to our health and lifestyle. If we treat our body and mind well, they will look after our wellbeing . But majority of us neglect and ill-treat our body until it turns against us.
  • Besides hard work It needs discipline, dedication, consistency, focus, a strict routine and regime which builds ‘No excuses’ mindset to achieve anything in life. Having a right and well guided fitness routine helps you in achieving all these traits for our wellbeing which in turn supports you in taking good care of your people and contributing something to society.
  • Be a doer, don’t wait. Do it for your health, your family, do it so that you will get mentally strong and healthy. Transforming yourself physically will transform your mental strength. A healthy body leads to a healthy mind. A healthy motivated mind will always do better for oneself and contributes positively to family and the society.

Keys of High Performance

Key areas to focus to be a high performer. Content taken from ‘High Performance Habits” book by Brandon Bouchard.

  • CLARITY . Improving this area gives you greater confidence in who you are, which decisions are right for you at this stage of your life, and what will make you truly healthy, wealthy, and happy. How could you gain more clarity in life right now? A simple thing you could do is to set an intention for who you want to be and how you want to interact with others right BEFORE you enter any social situation.

  • ENERGY. Start some new daily practices that can help improve your mental, emotional and physical vibrancy. People really struggle with this one. Personally, my best habit is ensuring my environment is setup for me to win. Nutrition first. Then I protect my sleep and make sure I work out every other day. (The top 15% of high performers are 40% more likely to workout 5x per week!)

  • NECESSITY . This measures the level of emotional commitment you feel to showing up each day as your best. It’s your level of “must” in improving your life and serving others with excellence. If you haven’t felt as driven or motivated as you want, this is a great area to focus on. Start with asking yourself every day at work, “Who needs me on my A game right now?” Really connect with who you are working for – sometimes we’ll do more for others than ourselves, right? The chapter on psychological necessity in my book is probably the most popular of all, so be sure to read that one.

  • PRODUCTIVITY. It’s REALLY hard to achieve your long-term goals. Maybe it’s time to minimize distractions and start some new habits to master your time management and project planning? My suggestion is to NEVER check your email in the first 60 minutes of the workday. Use that time to strategize, get real work done, and reach out to those you are needing a reply from. Stay in offence, not reaction, in that first 60 minutes and you’ll win more days.

  • INFLUENCE. This area of your life is EVERYTHING. When we can’t get people to believe in us, support us, buy from us, or take the actions we suggest, then it’s hard to ever get ahead. A good starting place is to focus on being a great role model, asking a lot of questions, and seeking to be more patient, compassionate and available to others.

  • COURAGE. Do the people around you truly know who you are, what you dream of, what you need? Are you living your truth, taking risks, putting yourself out there? The next level for all of us requires a greater willingness to venture into the unknown despite risks or judgement. Try telling others what you REALLY think or feel more often, and take one small step into the unknown every day.

Many Of Us Just Submitted To Life

The problem isn’t that we don’t know how not to get punched in the face. The problem is that, at some point, likely a long time ago, we got punched in face, and instead of punching back, we decided we deserved it. The fact that we could not equalize means that there must be something inherently inferior about us, and/or something inherently superior about the person who hit us.

Life kicks you around a little bit, and you feel powerless to stop it. Therefore, your Feeling Brain (sub-conscious brain) concludes that you must deserve it. We don’t fight back. We accept the things the way they are. We tend to believe that we deserve many events in our lives even though we inherently feel that we deserve much better things.

Of course, the reverse moral gap must be true as well. If we’re given a bunch of stuff without earning it (participation trophies and grade inflation and gold medals for coming in ninth place), we (falsely) come to believe ourselves inherently superior to what we actually are. We therefore develop a deluded version of high self-worth, or, as it’s more commonly known, being a mean person and a bully.

Without developing a clear vision of the future we desire, of the values we want to adopt, of the identities we want to shed or step into—we are forever doomed to repeat the failures of our past pain.

The stories of our past define our identity. The stories of our future define our hopes. And our ability to step into those narratives and live them, to make them reality, is what gives our lives meaning.

How Do You Feel When You Think About Your Future Self

In this day and age unless we have a goal or a mission or a passion that pulls us ahead, most probably we might get lost this is rut of life . Life in generally does not please us in all stages of our live. Life tries to kick us in our back the moment we wake up in the morning.

Whenever you have time – Try and introspect – how you want to look yourself in future, like inspiring others, creating some value for others, others showing immense respect because of the impact you made in their lives, giving an inspirational talk on a stage, you giving livelihood to others, you accomplishing something noble for which you have been rewarded when you are least expecting it and in that moment you acknowledging all the people who supported, encouraged, been with you through difficulties of life is something that you have to just imagine to relish the preciousness of moment.

The moments that you create and imagine in your mind, the amazing feeling of being revered because you have made a positive impact in other’s lives, for which you have tirelessly worked on some mission which is larger than yourself. When you cherish the struggles and pain you have endured during this process, when you picture all of these future possibilities in your mind, you need to get chills and feel grateful to even be in a position to imagine all these possibilities.

When we feel these kind of intense emotions when we think of our life’s passion and purpose, this should be strong enough to provide the fuel that propels us thought this journey called life.

How to Be Grateful for Who We Are

  • How to be grateful.
  • How to be respectful and value the our time and how we spend our day.
  • How to have a sense of urgency. How to keep working on something for a better tomorrow.
  • How to just admire , be in awe, value and take care of the privileges and gifts we are conferred in our lives.

Just go online and watch some videos of

  • somebody reacting when they were like blind for their whole lifetime and received eye sight,
  • when somebody has been deaf for their lifetime and able to hear sound for the first time,
  • when a homeless person is donated with some good food by someone,
  • when somebody achieving a victory in Olympics after a lot of hard work,
  • when a great actor or artist or humanitarian receiving award on the stage for their lifetime work and selfless contribution in that field,

Watch and listen to some of the stories of high achievers and performers on how they struggled, how they overcame their difficulties, how they suffered in various stages of their lives to achieve their vision, how they were persistent and consistent when they were physically and mentally exhausted yet kept moving forward in the path of their mission.

Watching and witnessing these kind of events would revoke a sense of gratitude in us. It gives us some space to rethink the way we are valuing our virtues in our lives. It creates a sense of value and respect towards the common amenities we are experiencing daily. It gives us a hope that we can do something, we can also contribute to the betterment of the people, we could live a life to leave a legacy, that we had a positive impact and improved people’s lives when we leave this world,

Why We Must Take Self-Care

Let’s imagine a situation where somebody has hurt the finger. Since it is a small wound that person has decided to not address it by cleaning it, dressing it and applying an antiseptic ointment. Let us say it as turned septic. Still it is not a big deal, since it is a small wound and it is not affecting your physical performance, you would ignore and keep going with your stuff. Now slowly but steadily you would feel the pain and infection spreading across your body. Then you may have fever and had to take bed rest. Now if you do not address it even at this stage it could be life threatening.

This is how all insignificant yet very relevant and most important aspects of life are taken care of . Like health, relationships, seriousness in job, your wellbeing, your vision and passion. Now I strongly believe that this is relevant to all of us whether one is following a good lifestyle or not .

The lifestyle many people now a days indulge in, majorly involves instant gratification, avoidance of discomfort and struggle. This could be a non-issue today but results in unavoidable sufferings in various forms.

We need to constantly remind ourselves to show gratitude and respect towards some of the important values of life like – our ‘overall wellbeing’ which involves our mental and physical strength, our emotional life which involves nurturing our relationships and social connections, our spiritual beliefs which gives us hope and faith in times of difficulties. To have a certain level of stability in all these areas of values needs work. This work is intricately tied with change, discomfort, pain, struggle. Self-development and growth is not possible without these hard experiences in life.

We need to constantly remind ourselves that we are the best rescuers of ourselves. Who else would know better about you than you. We know our best interests and we are the best people to judge what works for us and what not. We have to prepared and keep preparing to save and rescue ourselves when time arrives.

Confidence and Courage Must Be Built One Brick At A Time

You cannot set a target one day to achieve a world record for squatting or deadlifting. You cannot set a goal of running a Marathon one day and do it. You cannot set a goal of becoming a social media influencer and get 1 million subscribers in days. You cannot set a goal to get a six pack and achieve it in short span of time. You cannot set a goal to become a successful CEO of a company and reach that position in an year.

You cannot get that confidence and courage to reach the pinnacle in any area of life without a process and a journey. You set a goal and achieve it, raise the bar and achieve it and that’s how you keep improving keep building momentum.

How many people will keep up with the pace and give everything you could, to be consistent, to build that momentum, to keep exercising and follow a diet until you see the minor improvements to gain the initial confidence.

It is very easy for the people to just give up at any moment. It is easy to blame everything in the world except us. It is easy to give up , it is easy to blame, it is easy to complain, it is easy to feel jealous, it is easy to not show up, it is easy to talk negative things.

Mental state you approach anything , diets, routines, the way you decide to live, the things you want to do for a bigger purpose,  the mindset you develop when you commit yourself for some cause – There has to be some sacrifice or adjustments or compromises  in order to attain a higher standard .

All good things in life takes time, they do not happen overnight. Even if they happen, they vanish overnight. Easy come, easy go.

All successful people have gone through a lot of challenges, failures before reaching the level they are in right now. They

What did you do yesterday to give you the confidence to add an extra 10 KG weight on the bar bell. What was your previous bench mark and what is your new target. This is sustainable and achievable. This could be a constructive process which has better chances of adherence.

You would develop self-confidence to stick to a particular diet or exercise routine or a lifestyle only when you keep moving forward with minor interrelated achievements. It has to be step by step. You build a strong wall by laying a brick as good as possible. Brick by brick, it becomes a wall. This is how self-confidence builds and we get the courage to set a high target to reach a higher goal.

You just need to focus on what is ahead of you, what is visible to you, what is the best achievable target and set your eye on it. Hit the target and get that confidence that you can do it. With that confidence have the courage to set higher standards and surpass them. This is the process and system of progressive actions that builds self-confidence and courage to reach higher standards.

Progress and Growth are more important than Perfection. Consistent progress gives us the mettle to push ourselves to do worthy things in life. And remember that all worthy things are tough and hard to attain, hence we need confidence and courage to pursue our passions.

It Would Cost You To Achieve What You Want In Life

It is going to cost you something in your life when you are pursuing something larger than you especially that cause you are passionate about. It means you might have to give up something you love, you might have to make adjustments in life, you might have to compromise on your wishes and desires. It means you might have to pay a price for something that you didn’t even think or imagine of. You have to overcome unexpected scenarios which might need you to let go of your present comforts .

It is going to cost you some relationships. Not entirely cutting ties with them but may need redefining that way you interacted before. It might change the dynamics between your closed ones. No body other than you is going to gift you with anything that makes the process simpler and easier for you. It is you who has to make it everything you want it to be.

It is going to cost you a lot in terms of your time. You may have to put in a lot of personal time into your dream project. You might have to sacrifice a bit of your sleeping time, a bit of family time, a bit of your recreation time, a bit of your lunch time, a bit of your time you spend on watching online videos or tv and so on.

It will cost you in terms of you effort. You have to stretch yourself. You might have to push yourself harder. You might have to put in those extra hours outside of every regular task you must do daily. You have to work even when nobody is watching you. You have to relentlessly work on your passion, whether anyone cares or not.

Sometimes it might take 6 months or 1 year or 2 years or 5 years. Can you consistently keep nurturing your idea regardless of how the external factors influence you. Do you believe in it so much that you can keep going irrespective of the failures you experience.

It could cost you mentally. It could be a lonely journey. It is quite possible that nobody gives a damn about your idea. It is possible that no body except you believe in your idea and mission.

  • Can you walk alone and believe in the road you are commuting.
  • Can you  ignore all the negative talk, all the criticism, all the demotivation you receive from others and just believe your noble cause and proceed.
  • Can you pursue your dreams in spite of no support, help or encouragement from others. Do not expect others to understand your passion and cause.
  • Are you capable to understand others perception, keep ego aside and try to take them along with you as much as you could.
  • Can you keep your family and close ones together and bring them along with you in the hard times, even though they don’t believe in your dream.
  • Can you keep stepping forward alone without expecting anything from others until somebody joins you in  your march.

For so long I really expected all my loved ones to understand me, understand what I am doing why I am doing my vision. But they cannot because it is not their business to invest time on my purpose or my vision. It is my job to take them along, it is my job to set aside my ego and explain them my mission and kind of work that I am doing for a bigger purpose.

Are you willing to give up your personal time, comforts in the process of pursuing your dream and becoming success.

If you are pursuing something just for some monetary benefits, some likes on social media, for popularity, for becoming famous, for some selfish purpose that serves only you, if you think that this gives you happiness and success then you shall be disappointed at some stage.

Decide on which aspects of your life are you willing to trade and how much of them are you willing to adjust. If you are trading in your health and fitness for success, if you are trading in your family time for your happiness and future success, if you are trading in your relationships for your ambition, then you may not be satisfied at the end. Success and achievement at the end will be worthy if it is complete along with your overall wellbeing. You would not be fulfilled if you are unhealthy and successfully pursuing your mission, you would not be able to whole heartedly enjoy your accomplishments if your family is not along with you, your purpose is not worth it if serves only you and does not positively impact others, you would not relish the hardships and challenges in the process if there is no bigger cause and sense of contribution attached to your mission.

So weather it is the extra effort, extra discomfort, experiencing pain, facing challenges, pushing through the difficult times, taking risks, giving up something good for something better tomorrow, sticking with your purpose and mission, your vision, everything is with you and it is you who has to show maturity in balancing the important aspects of life to have a holistic experience of successes in life.
