Our Environment Has A Huge Impact On Our Gene Expression

• Researchers found that very few diseases today are actually genetically driven, and how our ‘environment’ has a much greater effect on our health than we think. Genes are turned ON and OFF by the environment.
• Our ‘environment’ means food we eat, lifestyle, exercise, sleep, job, stress in life, exposure to kind of information we watch or read, place we are living, exposure to toxins in food, air and water.
• It is not entirely true that if we are genetically pre-disposed to a certain disease, we are going to have the disease. Genes may increase the risk of getting the disease but if you take 2 people having same genes and put them in different environments, their life outcomes would be different.
• Take the example of Breast cancer, out of 100 women who have breast cancer, only 7 have the breast cancer genes. The rest of the 93 women got the breast cancer even though they don’t have the cancer gene.
• In many cases chronic diseases represent a person’s lifestyle and not their genes.
