We do risky things because we can do them, their uncertainty and repeatability

People who are into gambling and lottery are more excited about the prospect of losing than the prospect of winning. Because there is far more higher chances of someone losing in a game of randomness then the possibility of winning. So you racing against uncertainty and betting against your odds which gives you an instant high when you win. You experience a bigger rush of joy if you win when you are expecting loss. Your dopamine levels raise when you go through a risky process and come out victorious.

The idea of ‘near miss phenomenon’ and the experience of ‘just missing’ something stimulates us to do the same activity again. You having control to do it again and again, then the results of the behaviour being unpredictable leading to greater anticipation of a positive outcome and then finally you having an option to repeat the same activity in the hope of getting what you desire leads to uncontrollable and addictive feedback loop.
